so today at break i ripped a plastic cup when it still had water in it and even though the rip went below the water line, the water stayed in the cup rather than pouring out through the lil’ gap. have i broken science?

It’s because of the water surface tension. Hydrogen atoms have a slight positive charge, whilst Oxygen atoms have a negative charge. So the H2O molecules have an attraction to one another as the positive hydrogen attracts to the negative oxygen. Each water molecule is sticking together so it doesn’t spill out as there is only a tiny tear past the water level.
